AI briefing

from the latest 10-K, 10-Q and 8-K events

Axcelis Technologies is a Beverly, Massachusetts-based maker of ion implantation equipment for semiconductor fabrication, with 98.2% of 2025 revenue from ion implant and the rest from legacy aftermarket.

What they do

Axcelis designs, manufactures and services ion implantation and other processing equipment used to fabricate semiconductor chips, selling to leading chipmakers worldwide through a direct sales force in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Its Purion family is its flagship implanter line, and it also sells aftermarket lifecycle products and services including used tools, spare parts, upgrades, maintenance and training. Product development and manufacturing occur primarily in the United States and South Korea.

Revenue drivers

  • Systems (ion implantation equipment) — Core business; systems revenue was $571.0 million in 2025 versus $782.6 million in 2024, and power devices accounted for 55% of the value of 2025 system shipments.
  • Aftermarket / Customer Solutions & Innovation (CS&I) — Spare parts, upgrades, used tools, maintenance and training; services were 6.8% of second-quarter 2026 revenue and 6.2% of first-half 2026 revenue, and management cited higher CS&I volume in Q2 2026.
  • Mature process / power device segment — Mature process was 77% of first-half 2026 shipped systems revenue, split 38% power devices and 39% general mature (including image sensors).
  • Memory (DRAM) applications — DRAM was 22% of first-half 2026 shipped systems revenue, with advanced logic at 1%; management said memory demand remains robust.

Recent performance

Second-quarter 2026 revenue was $215.2 million, up from $194.5 million in Q2 2025. GAAP gross margin was 42.4% and GAAP operating margin 9.4%, down from 44.9% and 14.9% a year earlier. GAAP net income was $23.3 million, or $0.75 diluted EPS, versus $31.4 million and $0.98 in Q2 2025; non-GAAP diluted EPS was $1.06 versus $1.13. Revenue rose sequentially from $199.0 million in Q1 2026 but was below the $238.3 million reported for Q4 2025.

Strategy

Axcelis is focused on ion implant and states it remains a technology leader and supplier of choice in the implant-intensive power device segment. It continues to invest in the CS&I aftermarket business, including its 'Digital Tool Box' service offering, and has four Purion evaluation systems in the field at strategic customer sites. On September 30, 2025 it agreed to merge with Veeco Instruments, with Veeco to survive as a wholly-owned Axcelis subsidiary; stockholders approved the share issuance on February 6, 2026. The company says it is working to satisfy remaining closing conditions, including final regulatory approval from China's State Administration for Market Regulation.

Risks

  • Customer concentration — The ten largest customers were 55.2% of 2025 revenue and 68.5% of first-half 2026 revenue, with one customer at 11.0% of 2025 revenue, so loss of a major customer would materially hit results.
  • Semiconductor capital spending cycle — The company states its revenue and profitability fall when chipmakers cut or defer fab construction and expansion, and its fixed cost structure does not vary significantly with volume.
  • Veeco merger closing risk — The merger remains subject to closing conditions including pending Chinese regulatory approval, and the company says it expects completion in the second half of 2026.
  • New product execution — Axcelis says future success depends on developing and introducing reliable new systems that meet chipmaker requirements, on schedule and at volume, in a rapidly changing process environment.

Outlook

For third-quarter 2026, Axcelis guides revenue of approximately $230 million, GAAP diluted EPS of about $0.76 and non-GAAP EPS of about $1.11. Management said on the Q2 2026 call that it now expects year-over-year revenue growth in 2026, with momentum carrying into 2027, citing robust memory demand and positive momentum in power. It also said financial performance should continue to improve over the balance of 2026 and that it expects to close the Veeco merger in the second half of 2026.
