What they do
Ashland produces additives and specialty ingredients used in architectural coatings, construction, energy, food and beverage, personal care and pharmaceutical applications. With approximately 2,900 employees worldwide, it serves customers in more than 100 countries, and sales generated outside North America were 73% in fiscal 2025 and 73% in the June 2026 quarter. Products include controlled-release polymers and tablet coatings, biofunctionals and preservatives, rheology modifiers and foam control agents, and 1,4 butanediol (BDO) and related derivatives such as n-methylpyrrolidone.
Revenue drivers
- Life Sciences — Pharmaceuticals, nutrition, agricultural chemicals, diagnostic films and fine chemicals; the largest segment at 35% of fiscal 2025 sales and 36% of sales in the quarter ended June 30, 2026.
- Personal Care — Biofunctionals, microbial protectants, skin, sun, oral and hair care and household solutions; 32% of fiscal 2025 sales and 31% in the June 2026 quarter.
- Specialty Additives — Rheology and performance-enhancing additives for architectural coatings, construction, energy, automotive and industrial markets; 28% of fiscal 2025 sales and 27% in the June 2026 quarter.
- Intermediates — Production of BDO and related derivatives including n-methylpyrrolidone, used in engineering polymers, polyurethanes and specialty process solvents; 5% of fiscal 2025 sales and 6% in the June 2026 quarter, with BDO also supplied internally as a raw material.
Recent performance
Fiscal 2026 third-quarter sales were $497 million, up seven percent from $463 million a year earlier, with volumes up six percent across all business units and pricing up approximately one percent. Net income was $16 million, or $0.35 per diluted share, compared with a $742 million loss in the prior-year quarter; income from continuing operations was $41 million, or $0.89 per diluted share. Adjusted income from continuing operations excluding intangibles amortization expense was $47 million, or $1.02 per diluted share, down from $48 million, or $1.04, a year earlier. Adjusted EBITDA of $109 million was down four percent, as Life Sciences and Personal Care growth was more than offset by lower Specialty Additives and Intermediates earnings. Cash provided by operating activities was $121 million; fiscal 2025 full-year revenue was $1.82 billion with a net loss of $845 million.
Strategy
Management is executing globalize and innovate strategies that it says continued to exceed targets, supported by customer engagement and the differentiated portfolio. In the third quarter, the company said plant operations improved and profitability rose sequentially, while acknowledging further work on operational priorities and investments to improve reliability and throughput. Ashland reported net leverage of 2.4x at quarter-end, back within its long-term target range. It is focused on commercial execution, operating performance, cash generation and productivity, and said it is expanding the reach of its technology platforms.
Risks
- Tariffs and trade policy — U.S. tariffs on imports from China, the E.U., India and other countries and resulting retaliatory measures create risk of supply chain strain, higher sourcing and manufacturing costs and lower demand for Ashland products.
- Geopolitical conflicts — The ongoing Israel/Iran, Ukraine/Russia and Israel/Hamas conflicts, plus U.S. involvement, may escalate geopolitical tensions, worsen macroeconomic conditions, interrupt supply chains and affect energy markets, and the impact to Ashland could be material.
- Growth goal execution — Ashland has set aggressive growth goals for its reportable segments and failure to optimize assets, identify and integrate acquisition targets or manage acquisition costs could reduce sales, raise expenses or impair goodwill and intangibles.
- Profitability pressure — In the June 2026 quarter, Adjusted EBITDA fell four percent despite seven percent sales growth because lower Specialty Additives and Intermediates earnings more than offset gains in Life Sciences and Personal Care.
Outlook
Ashland reaffirmed full-year fiscal 2026 sales guidance of $1,835-$1,870 million and Adjusted EBITDA guidance of $385-$400 million. Management said that as operational performance improves and production increasingly aligns with demand, it expects greater flexibility across the network and an improving profitability profile. It also said the macroeconomic environment remains uncertain, and it is focused on factors within its control: commercial execution, operating performance, cash generation and productivity.
