Key statistics
from XBRL data in SEC filingsAI briefing
from the latest 10-K, 10-Q and 8-K eventsCognex Corporation is a global industrial machine vision company founded in 1981 that sells hardware and software used to automate manufacturing and distribution tasks.
What they do
Cognex blends hardware and software to capture and analyze visual information so that machines can locate, identify, inspect, and measure discrete items such as mobile phones, automotive components, and consumer goods. Its products are used where human vision is inadequate for size, accuracy, or speed, or where labor savings or quality improvements are available. The company sells directly and through partners including OEMs, machine builders, and system integrators to customers in nearly all industries that manufacture discrete items on an assembly line or move goods through a distribution center.
Revenue drivers
- Logistics — Serves e-commerce and parcel customers with barcode reading and AI-enabled vision for traceability, dimensioning, and detection; logistics, packaging, consumer electronics, and automotive combined were approximately 85% of 2025 total revenue.
- Packaging — Spans fast-moving consumer goods and healthcare-related industries, with growth tied to increasingly stringent regulations.
- Consumer electronics — One of the four largest end markets by revenue, driven by manufacturing of discrete items such as mobile phones.
- Automotive — One of the four largest end markets by revenue, serving assembly-line component manufacturing.
Recent performance
Second-quarter 2026 revenue was a record $291 million, up 17% year over year, or 16% on a constant-currency basis, driven by broad-based strength across most major end markets. GAAP operating income was $86 million at a 29.4% operating margin, up 1,200 basis points, and Adjusted EBITDA margin was 32.2%, up 1,150 basis points. Gross margin was 70.6% versus 67.4% a year earlier, and operating expenses decreased 3% to $120 million. GAAP diluted EPS was $0.43 and Adjusted diluted EPS was $0.45, up 80% year over year. For full-year 2025, revenue was $994.4 million, net income was $114.4 million, and diluted EPS was $0.68.
Strategy
Management is pursuing diversification across customers, channels, adjacencies, and end markets, prioritizing automation challenges where the technology creates the most value. The company is extending its position in AI-enabled machine vision, aiming to deliver the leading customer experience and to double its customer base. It continues to transform its operating model to drive higher productivity, support sustainable margin expansion, and scale efficiently. In 2025 it launched its first line of Solutions Experience (SLX) devices for logistics, integrating AI with intuitive deployment workflows. It announced general availability of OneVision, with hundreds of customers using the platform to accelerate configuration and deployment of AI-powered vision applications.
Risks
- New product execution — Failure to introduce new products in a successful and timely manner could result in lost market share and lower revenues and profits, and new products may not achieve the gross margins experienced historically.
- Competition — The machine vision market remains fragmented and competitive, with competitors including other machine vision vendors, image processing and sensor manufacturers, system integrators, customer internal engineering departments, and open-source tools.
- Customer concentration — The loss of, or curtailment of purchases by, large customers in the logistics, consumer electronics, or automotive end markets could materially harm results.
- Supply chain and components — Inability to manage direct and indirect supply chain disruptions, or to obtain components such as memory chips at reasonable prices and on time, could delay product manufacturing and delivery.
Outlook
The company issued full-year 2026 guidance anticipating strong double-digit revenue growth and significant year-over-year expansion in profitability. Management cited a more favorable demand environment and focused execution in the second quarter. It believes its diversification strategy positions Cognex for more sustainable and profitable growth over time.
