Revenue drivers
- Bedding segment — Manufactures, sources, and sells fabrics and mattress covers to bedding manufacturers; grew sales 13.2% year over year in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, and the increase in consolidated sales was primarily attributable to this segment.
- Upholstery segment — Develops, sources, manufactures, and sells fabrics to residential, commercial, and hospitality furniture manufacturers; sales decreased 1.9% year over year in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, though within range of the comparable quarter on a shorter selling period.
- Read Window Products — Wholly owned subsidiary within upholstery that provides window treatments, sourced upholstery fabrics, soft goods, and related measuring and installation services to hospitality and commercial markets.
Recent performance
For the first quarter ended August 2, 2026, consolidated net sales were $54.0 million, up 6.5% from $50.7 million, despite the quarter having 13 weeks versus 14 in the comparable period. Strategy
Culp completed a strategic transformation announced April 24, 2025 to combine activities within the bedding and upholstery segments into one integrated Culp-branded business, finished by the end of fiscal 2026. The prior fiscal 2025 restructuring consolidated North American bedding operations, closed and sold the Quebec, Canada facility, moved knitting and finishing to Stokesdale, North Carolina, transitioned bedding weaving to a strategic sourcing model mainly with a long-standing Turkish supplier, and consolidated the Haiti sewn mattress cover operation into one building. In fiscal 2026 the company closed the leased Burlington, North Carolina upholstery facility and moved its distribution and Read operations into the owned Stokesdale facility, and reduced its facility footprint in China. Priorities in the latest quarter included inventory reduction, cash flow and balance sheet management, and applying tariff proceeds received in the quarter.
Risks
- Home furnishings demand weakness — Management cites continued challenges in home furnishings, including softness in consumer spending and housing-related activity affecting demand.
- Global trade and tariff uncertainty — The company cites ongoing uncertainty associated with global trade and tariff conditions, and first quarter fiscal 2027 results included one-time IEEPA tariff recoveries tied to previously incurred costs.
- Nasdaq listing-rule failure — Culp filed an 8-K on February 23, 2026 disclosing a delisting notice or listing-rule failure, together with a Regulation FD disclosure.
- Revenue and cash flow trend — Annual revenue declined from $294.8 million in fiscal 2022 to $203.5 million in fiscal 2026, and operating cash flow was negative $9.4 million in fiscal 2026 after negative $17.6 million in fiscal 2025.
Outlook
Management believes demand in core bedding and furniture markets should improve over the longer term and that commercial strategies will support additional revenue growth, particularly if bedding industry replacement-cycle trends develop as anticipated. In upholstery, management noted some indications that demand in residential upholstery, the largest upholstery end market, may be stabilizing, and cited growth on the hospitality and contract side of the business. Management cautions that the timing and extent of any recovery remain dependent on a sustained improvement in housing activity and discretionary consumer spending.
