from the latest 10-K, 10-Q and 8-K eventsLumentum is a single-segment optical and photonic products maker supplying cloud, AI/ML, telecom, consumer and industrial customers, with fiscal 2026 revenue of $3.01 billion.
What they do
Lumentum designs and manufactures optical and photonic products used in cloud data centers, AI/ML infrastructure, communications service provider networks, consumer 3D sensing and industrial material processing. It operates as one reportable segment and disaggregates revenue into Components (laser chips, laser sub-assemblies, line subsystems, wavelength management systems) and Systems (optical modules, optical circuit switches, short-pulse solid-state lasers and kilowatt-class fiber lasers). Manufacturing, R&D and sales are spread across North America, Asia-Pacific and Europe, with headquarters in San Jose, California. The company was spun off from JDSU in 2015 and has since acquired Oclaro, NeoPhotonics, IPG Photonics' telecom transmission product lines and Cloud Light.
Revenue drivers
- Components — Building-block products such as semiconductor laser chips, laser sub-assemblies, line subsystems and wavelength management systems, sold to cloud data center operators, AI/ML infrastructure providers and network equipment manufacturers who integrate them into their own systems. Components were 64.5% of Q4 FY2026 net revenue at $649.4 million, up 102.7% year over year.
- Systems — Complete stand-alone products including optical modules, optical circuit switches and industrial lasers (short-pulse solid-state and kilowatt-class fiber). Systems were 35.5% of Q4 FY2026 net revenue at $356.9 million.
- Cloud and AI/ML datacom — Management cites AI compute workloads and data center architects turning to optical links as a primary connectivity means, with growth drivers including OCS solutions, cloud optical modules and 1.6T adoption layering in.
- Industrial lasers and 3D sensing — Industrial lasers are used for precision material processing in semiconductor and microelectronics fabrication, EV and battery production, and metal cutting and welding; laser-based 3D sensing and LiDAR target security, industrial and automotive applications.
Recent performance
Q4 FY2026 net revenue was $1.01 billion, up 109.3% from $480.7 million in Q4 FY2025 and up 24.5% from $808.4 million in Q3 FY2026. GAAP gross margin was 47.4% and non-GAAP gross margin 50.4%; GAAP operating margin was 27.8% and non-GAAP operating margin 36.6%. Q4 GAAP net loss was $7.2 billion, or $84.65 per diluted share, driven by a one-time non-cash loss on debt extinguishment of $7.8 billion from equitizing certain convertible notes; non-GAAP net income was $326.3 million, or $3.23 per diluted share. Full fiscal year 2026 revenue was $3.01 billion versus $1.6 billion in fiscal 2025, with GAAP net loss of $6.9 billion ($92.96 per diluted share) and non-GAAP net income of $782.3 million ($8.67 per diluted share).
Strategy
Lumentum invests in new and differentiated products and technologies plus customer programs, both organically and through acquisitions, and continues optimizing operations. It completed acquisitions including Oclaro (2018), NeoPhotonics and IPG Photonics' telecom transmission product lines (2022) and Cloud Light (2023) to broaden its portfolio and revenue mix. In FY2026 the company moved from two reportable segments to one integrated enterprise. Management points to OCS solutions, cloud modules and 1.6T adoption, ultra-high-power CPO lasers, an initial ELS module order and NPO engagements as signs optics are penetrating in-rack connectivity.
Risks
- Customer and supplier concentration — The company cites reliance on a limited number of suppliers and customers, and its ability to sell to a significant customer, as risks.
- Trade restrictions and tariffs — Risk factors flag trade restrictions, export control laws and customs regulations, tariffs, and higher tariffs and trade restrictions between the U.S. and other countries including China and Thailand.
- Order variability and backlog — The 10-K lists order cancellations, reductions or delays in delivery schedules by customers or distributors, and notes backlog may not be an accurate indicator of the level and timing of future revenue.
- Margin and technology pressure — Risk factors include gross and operating margins varying over time, supply chain constraints, changes in technology and intense competition, and product design or manufacturing defects.
Outlook
For the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, Lumentum guides revenue of $1.225 billion to $1.275 billion, non-GAAP operating margin of 39.5% to 40.5%, and non-GAAP diluted net income per share of $4.05 to $4.35. CEO Michael Hurlston said the trajectory continues to accelerate as AI demand drives the Q1 revenue guidance midpoint to $1.25 billion, reaching the target model more than a quarter ahead of schedule. The company said growth drivers including OCS solutions and the cloud module business, where it is advancing 1.6T adoption, are beginning to layer in.
