What they do
MSA designs, manufactures and sells safety products across three principal categories: detection, fire service and industrial personal protective equipment (PPE). Its fixed gas and flame detection (FGFD) systems serve energy, utility, HVAC-R, water and wastewater, food retail and general industrial facilities, and generate meaningful recurring revenue from replacement components and service. The company also markets its MSA+ ecosystem, a turnkey combination of hardware, software and services. It operates four geographic operating segments aggregated into Americas and International reportable segments, with manufacturing in the U.S., Mexico, Brazil, Germany, France, U.K., Ireland, Morocco and China.
Revenue drivers
- Americas segment — Largest reportable segment, representing 67% of 2025 net sales. Q2 2026 net sales were $341.5M, up 7% year-over-year, with GAAP operating margin of 31.1%.
- International segment — Represented 33% of 2025 net sales. Q2 2026 net sales were $161.9M, up 5% year-over-year, with GAAP operating margin of 14.2%.
- Detection / FGFD systems — Permanently installed fixed gas and flame detection products used across energy, utility, HVAC-R, water/wastewater, food retail and industrial applications, with a meaningful recurring component from replacement parts and service.
- MSA+ ecosystem — Turnkey hardware, software and services approach intended to simplify customer safety operations and deliver recurring revenue.
Recent performance
For the second quarter of 2026, MSA reported net sales of $503.3M, a 6% GAAP increase and 3% organic increase year-over-year, with GAAP operating income of $112.0M (22.2% of sales) and adjusted operating income of $121.1M (24.1% of sales). GAAP net income was $86.2M, or $2.23 per diluted share, up 40% year-over-year, and adjusted earnings were $93.1M, or $2.40 per diluted share, up 24%. Free cash flow was $82.7M with free cash flow conversion of 96%. Full-year 2025 revenue was $1.87B with net income of $278.9M and operating cash flow of $363.9M.
Strategy
Management is executing its Accelerate strategy, which it cites as the driver of recent operating performance and margin expansion. The company completed the acquisition of M&C TechGroup in May 2025 for approximately $189M, adding gas analysis systems for critical environments, and announced the acquisition of Autronica Fire and Security for $555M, which closed in early July 2026. Autronica is described as complementary to the existing fixed detection platform and expected to expand the addressable market. MSA also raised its annual dividend for the 56th consecutive year and repurchased 153,357 shares during the quarter ended June 30, 2026 under a $500.0M program approved February 20, 2026.
Risks
- Product liability and recalls — Products are used in high-risk environments, and claims of injury, recalls or field actions could result in significant expense or negative publicity beyond available insurance coverage.
- Subsidiary product liability exposure — Subsidiaries face inherent exposure to single-incident and cumulative trauma product liability lawsuits, with new claims difficult to predict and potentially escalating suddenly.
- Foreign currency translation — A hypothetical 10% strengthening or weakening of the U.S. dollar would decrease or increase reported sales by approximately $21.8M (4.3%) and net income by approximately $3.0M (3.5%) for the three months ended June 30, 2026.
- Interest rate exposure — At June 30, 2026, MSA had $312.5M of variable rate borrowings, where a 100 basis point rate change would have an $8.8M impact on future annual earnings.
Outlook
Management's full-year sales outlook includes low-double-digit total revenue growth. The company raised its annual dividend for the 56th consecutive year. The Autronica acquisition, which closed in early July 2026 for $555M, is expected to build on the existing fixed detection platform and expand the addressable market.
