Revenue drivers
- Net interest income — The main earnings source, the spread between interest earned on loans and securities and interest paid on deposits and borrowings. Total interest income was $749.7 million and net interest income $525.4 million in 2025.
- Commercial and commercial real estate lending — Commercial real estate loans were $3.23 billion and commercial loans $2.50 billion of the $12.86 billion total loans receivable, net, at December 31, 2025.
- Residential mortgage, home equity and consumer lending — Residential mortgage loans were $3.09 billion, home equity loans $1.50 billion, and consumer loans $2.53 billion at December 31, 2025.
- Noninterest income — Service charges and fees on loan and deposit products, investment management and trust fees, and gains on sales including SBA loans and mortgage banking income. Noninterest income was $129.3 million in 2025.
Recent performance
For the second quarter of 2026, Northwest reported record net income of $54 million, or $0.36 per diluted share, up from $34 million, or $0.26 per diluted share, a year earlier. Adjusted diluted EPS was $0.37. Net interest margin expanded to 3.75%, average loans receivable rose 16.4% year over year to $13.09 billion (largely due to the Penns Woods acquisition), and average deposits grew 16.3% year over year to $14.13 billion.
Strategy
Management said it continues to focus on organic growth initiatives, further optimizing financial performance, expanding the financial center network, and serving core customers. The company cited investing in talent, technology, and new financial centers while maintaining expense discipline, with a second quarter efficiency ratio of 57.6% and adjusted efficiency ratio of 56.2%. The July 25, 2025 Penns Woods merger added $2.2 billion of total assets and brought Luzerne Bank and Jersey Shore State Bank into Northwest Bank. Management also noted its team is making an impact in the Columbus market, attracting new talent, customers, and deposits.
Risks
- Merger integration and benefit realization — The anticipated benefits of the Penns Woods merger may not be realized or may not be realized within the expected time period, and the merger may affect customer and employee relationships.
- Credit quality deterioration — Changes in asset quality, including increases in default rates and higher nonperforming loans and charge-offs, could require higher provisions for credit losses, which rose to $55.6 million in 2025 from $24.5 million in 2024.
- Interest rate and margin pressure — Inflation and changes in the interest rate environment could reduce margins, loan origination, or the fair value of financial instruments.
- Deposit and funding competition — Competition among depository and other financial institutions, including with respect to deposit gathering, service charges, and fees, could affect liquidity and funding costs.
Outlook
Management said it is building on strong first-half performance and continues to focus on organic growth, performance optimization, financial center expansion, and serving core customers. The company declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.20 per share payable August 18, 2026, its 127th consecutive quarterly cash dividend, representing an annualized yield of approximately 5.3% based on the June 30, 2026 market value.
