What they do
RPID builds and sells the Growth Direct system, a robotic, imaging-based platform that automates growth-based microbial quality control testing in pharmaceutical manufacturing, replacing manual colony counting with proprietary vision algorithms and autofluorescence detection. The platform comprises the instrument, proprietary consumables, LIMS connection software, and field service, validation and post-warranty service contracts. Customers are manufacturers of biologics, cell and gene therapies, vaccines and sterile injectables. The Growth Direct system is placed in customer facilities and then generates recurring consumable and service revenue.
Revenue drivers
- Product revenue (systems and consumables) — Q2 2026 product revenue was $5.3 million, up 10.1% year over year. Consumable revenue grew more than 20% year over year in Q2 2026 and set quarterly records in units and revenue.
- Service revenue — Q2 2026 service revenue was $2.8 million, up 12.5% year over year, covering field service, validation and post-warranty service contracts.
- Recurring revenue (consumables plus service) — Recurring revenue was $5.0 million in Q2 2026, up 14.3% year over year and 63% of total revenue.
- System placements and validations — Four Growth Direct systems placed and nine customer system validations completed in Q2 2026; the 200th system was placed globally. Placements and validations drive future consumable and service revenue.
Recent performance
Q2 2026 total revenue was $8.1 million, up 10.9% from $7.3 million in Q2 2025. Gross margin was 15.0% ($1.2 million), a second-quarter record and up 11 percentage points from 3.8% a year earlier, on cost of revenue of $6.8 million. Net loss was $12.9 million, or $0.27 per share, versus a $11.9 million loss and $0.27 per share in Q2 2025. Non-GAAP adjusted EBITDA loss was $10.3 million. Full year 2025 revenue was $33.6 million with a net loss of $47.1 million and operating cash use of $31.1 million.
Strategy
Management is focused on margin expansion and a path to positive cash flow, citing Q2 2026 gross margin of 15% as a positive inflection and guiding to roughly 20% full-year 2026 gross margin with second-half margins in the mid-20% range. The company is pursuing multi-system and enterprise deployment opportunities, an expanded collaboration with MilliporeSigma (which will host a European Growth Direct Day in October 2026), and validation of additional customer applications. In May 2026 it raised net proceeds of $8.8 million in an underwritten public offering plus $0.1 million in a registered direct offering to directors and officers. The 10-K states a goal of achieving positive cash flow without additional financing, dependent on revenue growth, gross margin improvement and cost savings. It also carries a debt facility with Trinity Capital Inc.
Risks
- Persistent losses and cash use — Net losses were $47.1 million in 2025 and $46.9 million in 2024, with an accumulated deficit of $522.4 million as of December 31, 2025, and operating cash use of $31.1 million in 2025.
- Need for additional capital — The 10-K states that achieving positive cash flow without additional financing is a goal, not a guarantee, and requires significant additional revenue, better gross margin and/or further cost reduction.
- Customer adoption and validation dependency — Revenue depends on placing Growth Direct systems and completing customer validations; Q2 2026 had four placements and nine validations, and full-year 2026 guidance assumes 30 to 38 placements.
- Liquidity and leverage — As of June 30, 2026, cash and equivalents were $14.7 million against $40.7 million of total liabilities, including $19.1 million of long-term debt, while quarterly net losses remain around $13 million.
Outlook
Management reaffirmed full-year 2026 total revenue guidance of $37.0 million to $41.0 million, including 30 to 38 Growth Direct system placements, and gross margin of approximately 20% with second-half margins in the mid-20% range. It raised full-year 2026 validation guidance to at least 27 validations from 25 previously. Management cited strong customer engagement, multi-system and enterprise deployment momentum, the MilliporeSigma collaboration, and industry tailwinds including automation adoption and U.S. biomanufacturing capacity expansion.
