Recent performance
Second quarter 2026 net income was $18.9 million, or $0.56 per diluted share, up from $17.1 million, or $0.51, in Q1 2026 and $15.5 million, or $0.46, in Q2 2025. Net interest income rose $364 thousand to $52.9 million and NIM expanded 6 bps to 3.70%; NIM excluding accretion rose from 3.35% to 3.45%. ROAA was 1.24% for Q2 2026 versus 1.12% in Q1 2026 and 1.03% in Q2 2025, and the efficiency ratio improved to 57.76% from 61.97%. Book value per share increased to $18.44 at June 30, 2026 from $18.02 at March 31, 2026 and $16.94 a year earlier. Nonperforming assets were 1.09% of total assets at June 30, 2026, versus 1.10% at March 31, 2026 and 0.33% at June 30, 2025.
Strategy
Management's stated strategy is to build a leading community banking franchise delivering financial services to its communities, pursued through organic growth and strategic acquisitions within and contiguous to its footprint. The July 1, 2023 acquisition of The Community Financial Corporation added southern Maryland counties and the greater Fredericksburg, Virginia area, and produced an $8.8 million bargain purchase gain. Capital priorities include the newly announced $30 million share repurchase program, under which 40,093 shares were repurchased in Q2 2026, and a quarterly dividend raised to $0.14 per share. Management anticipates continued operating leverage improvement from expense management in professional services and technology investments. The title subsidiary, Mid-Maryland Title Company, ceased real estate closings effective March 31, 2025.
Risks
- Geographic concentration — Operations are concentrated in eastern and southern Maryland, Delaware and northern Virginia, making results sensitive to local economic conditions and to federal workforce, contractor and spending changes in the greater Washington, D.C. area.
- Asset quality deterioration — Nonperforming assets rose to 1.09% of total assets and classified assets to 1.41% at June 30, 2026 from 0.33% and 0.37% respectively a year earlier, and management says it is closely monitoring several commercial real estate relationships.
- Credit loss estimation — The allowance for credit losses is designated a critical accounting policy requiring significant subjective judgment and reasonable and supportable economic forecasts, so changes in conditions or asset-specific risk could materially affect results.
- Interest rate and funding sensitivity — Changes in market rates and prices can adversely affect the value of securities, loans, deposits and other financial instruments and the interest rate sensitivity of the balance sheet.
Outlook
Management points to expanding net interest margin, record net interest income and record profitability as evidence that disciplined balance sheet management and lower funding costs are working. It expects continued improvements in operating leverage over time from expense management of professional services and technology investments. It also states confidence in the franchise via the higher dividend and the new share repurchase program, while continuing to monitor several commercial real estate relationships.
