What they do
TrueBlue operates three segments: PeopleReady, PeopleManagement and PeopleSolutions. PeopleReady supplies on-demand general and skilled labor through branches in all 50 states and Puerto Rico plus the JobStack mobile app. PeopleManagement places and manages contingent associates at client facilities, including industrial staffing and commercial drivers. PeopleSolutions provides professional talent acquisition, workforce management and compliance services.
Revenue drivers
- PeopleReady — On-demand, contingent general and skilled labor for construction, transportation, manufacturing, retail, hospitality and energy; connected about 130,000 people with work and served about 52,000 clients in fiscal 2025, the largest client count among segments.
- PeopleManagement — Multi-location, multi-year on-site contingent workforce management under Staff Management | SMX, SIMOS and Centerline brands; connected about 38,000 people with work in fiscal 2025, specializing in labor-intensive manufacturing, warehousing and distribution with hourly and cost-per-unit pricing.
- PeopleSolutions — Professional and specialized talent acquisition, workforce management and compliance services, including global recruitment process outsourcing; described as focused on less cyclical, higher-value roles.
- Healthcare Staffing Professionals — Acquired in early 2025 and cited as a primary driver of the 3.1% total revenue growth in fiscal 2025, adding healthcare staffing to the portfolio.
Recent performance
Second quarter 2026 revenue was $443 million, up 12% from the prior-year period. Net loss was $3.4 million, or $0.11 per diluted share, versus a $0.2 million net loss a year earlier, and included a $3 million non-cash loss on assets held-for-sale. SG&A improved 7% to $84 million from $90 million, and adjusted EBITDA improved to $11 million from $3 million. At period end the company had $23 million cash, $82 million debt and $56 million unused borrowing base, for total liquidity of $79 million, after increasing working capital by $22 million.
Strategy
Management's stated strategy is to accelerate growth to capture market share while enhancing long-term profitability. Key elements include enhancing the sales function, expanding in high-growth, less cyclical and under-penetrated end markets and high-value roles, and accelerating innovation with technology and operational excellence. The company has simplified its organizational structure and continued operational cost management in response to softer demand. It also executed a sublease for its Chicago support center as part of a shift to a remote or hybrid work model and acquired Healthcare Staffing Professionals in early 2025.
Risks
- Cyclical demand — Demand for workforce solutions is highly dependent on the economy, and clients reduce contingent labor during periods of economic uncertainty, directly reducing revenue and profits.
- Margin pressure from revenue mix — Fiscal 2025 gross profit margin contracted 310 basis points to 22.8% due to a shift toward lower-margin staffing businesses and less favorability from prior-year workers' compensation reserve adjustments.
- Impairment and restructuring charges — The company recorded $59.7 million of goodwill and intangible impairments in fiscal 2024, $18.4 million of right-of-use and long-lived asset impairments in fiscal 2025 and a $3 million non-cash loss on assets held-for-sale in the second quarter of 2026.
- Liquidity and negative operating cash flow — Operating cash flow was negative $58.0 million in fiscal 2025, and at June 28, 2026 total liquidity was $79 million with $82.4 million of long-term debt.
Outlook
Management said it is providing certain forward-looking information in its quarterly earnings presentation filed August 4, 2026. The CEO stated results exceeded expectations with continued strength in skilled verticals and an encouraging return to growth in core on-demand business, and expressed confidence in the path to long-term sustainable value. The company cites the risks described in its filings, including economic conditions, margin maintenance, client retention and activist-investor matters.
