What they do
TrustCo conducts business principally through Trustco Bank, a federal savings bank supervised by the OCC that takes deposits and makes loans to individuals and businesses. It offers personal and business deposit products, trust and investment services through its Financial Services Department, and holds residential mortgage loans and mortgage-backed securities through its REIT subsidiary, Trustco Realty Corp. The Bank accounted for substantially all of TrustCo's 2025 consolidated net income and average assets, with smaller subsidiaries including Trustco Insurance Agency, ORE Property, Inc. and ORE Subsidiary Corp.
Revenue drivers
- Net interest income — TrustCo's primary income source is the spread between interest earned on loans and investments and interest paid on deposits and borrowings; it was $45.6 million in Q2 2026, up 9.2% from $41.7 million in Q2 2025.
- Loan portfolio repricing — Lower-yielding assets maturing and being replaced with higher-rate loan originations and investment purchases drove the net interest margin to 2.87% in Q2 2026 from 2.71% a year earlier, and average loans rose 3.8%, or $197.5 million.
- Deposit gathering — Average deposits increased $208.6 million, or 3.8%, in Q2 2026 versus Q2 2025; management describes taking in deposits and lending those funds back out in its market areas as a long-time business goal.
- Trust and investment services — The trust department, operating as Trustco Financial Services, serves as executor, trustee, and provider of asset and wealth management and custodial services, with approximately $1.27 billion of assets under trust, custody, or management as of December 31, 2025.
Recent performance
For the second quarter of 2026, TrustCo reported net income of $17.0 million, or $0.98 diluted EPS, up 12.8% from $15.0 million, or $0.79 diluted EPS, in Q2 2025. Net interest income rose 9.2% to $45.6 million and net interest margin expanded 16 basis points to 2.87%. For the six months ended June 30, 2026, net income was $33.3 million, or $1.89 diluted EPS, versus $29.3 million, or $1.54 diluted EPS, a year earlier. Book value per share was $38.53 at June 30, 2026, up from $36.75 a year earlier. Full-year net income was $61.1 million in 2025, up from $48.8 million in 2024, with diluted EPS of $3.25 versus $2.57.
Strategy
Management is focused on traditional banking, funding loan growth with deposit growth, and describes the symmetry of 3.8% year-over-year growth in both loans and deposits as realization of a long-time business goal. TrustCo is executing a stock repurchase program, having bought over one million shares in the first half of 2026 after one million shares in 2025, and says it is on pace to repurchase three million shares, or 15.8% of common stock, by the end of 2026. The company moved into a repurposed regional corporate headquarters in Longwood, Florida, which management cites as a sign of commitment to that state. Management expects continued improvement in net income and net interest income from asset repricing to remain sustainable.
Risks
- Interest rate risk — TrustCo's net interest income depends on the spread between asset yields and liability costs, and its interest-earning assets and interest-bearing liabilities may reprice at different times or degrees, which could hurt earnings if rates move contrary to its position.
- Yield curve shape — Management states that steeper yield curves are generally favorable for portfolio mortgage lenders like TrustCo, and the 10-year to 2-year Treasury spread narrowed from 0.62% in Q1 2026 to 0.46% in Q2 2026.
- Economic and geopolitical uncertainty — TrustCo cites economic uncertainty from tariff policy changes, Middle East tensions including the conflict in Iran, increased oil prices, and a volatile labor market as factors that could affect its balance sheet and income statement for the remainder of the year.
- Competition for deposits and loans — TrustCo faces strong competition in attracting deposits and making loans, most directly from commercial banks, savings associations, and credit unions located or branching in its market areas.
Outlook
Management expects the improvement in net income and net interest income to remain sustainable, driven by continued upward repricing of the loan and investment portfolios as lower-yielding assets mature and are replaced. The Federal Funds target range was 3.50% to 3.75% at mid-2026, unchanged in the first half, and the FOMC left rates unchanged in July 2026 with three members voting to increase. TrustCo expects continued volatility in economic markets from responses to inflation, recessionary signs, the conflict in Iran, and tariffs.
