Recent performance
For the first six months of 2026, Wintrust reported record net income of $461.1 million, or $6.52 per diluted common share, versus $384.6 million, or $5.47 per diluted share, a year earlier, a 20% increase. Second quarter 2026 net income was a record $233.7 million, or $3.30 per diluted share, compared with $227.4 million, or $3.22 per diluted share, in the first quarter of 2026. Net interest income rose to $597.4 million in the second quarter from $579.0 million in the first quarter on average earning asset growth, while the net interest margin decreased to 3.50% (3.52% fully taxable-equivalent, non-GAAP) on lower loan yields. Total loans grew $1.6 billion (12% annualized), deposits $2.2 billion (15% annualized) and assets $2.5 billion (14% annualized) versus March 31, 2026. Non-performing loans were $179.3 million, or 0.32% of total loans, at June 30, 2026, and the second quarter provision for credit losses was $23.1 million with net charge-offs of $13.4 million (10 basis points annualized).
Strategy
Management is pursuing diversified loan growth funded by organic deposit growth, emphasizing customer relationships and market positioning to grow the balance sheet and build long-term franchise value. It expects consistent balance sheet growth combined with a stable margin to expand net interest income in future quarters, and has said it remains committed to disciplined underwriting and prudent expense management to deliver positive operating leverage for 2026. Historically, the company has used its multiple bank charter structure to offer MaxSafe deposit accounts with expanded FDIC insurance coverage, and has pursued growth through acquisitions, FDIC-assisted transactions, new lines of business and de novo operations, which its risk factors note can involve significant expense and delayed returns. Segment reporting comprises community banking, specialty finance and wealth management.
Risks
- Geographic concentration — Wintrust states its business is concentrated in the Chicago metropolitan, southern Wisconsin and west Michigan market areas, so deterioration in those regional economies would disproportionately affect it.
- Competition and reputation — The company cites risks from its ability to compete effectively, damage to its reputation, consumers choosing not to use banks for financial transactions, and the soundness of other financial institutions.
- Growth and acquisitions — Its risk factors flag the ability to identify favorable acquisitions or successfully integrate them, FDIC-assisted acquisitions, new lines of business and products, and de novo operations that often carry significant expenses and delayed returns.
- Legal and regulatory — Risks include meeting regulatory capital ratios, changes in monetary policy, legislative and regulatory actions, data privacy and cybersecurity laws, FDIC insurance premium increases, BSA/USA PATRIOT Act compliance, tax examinations, accounting standard changes and U.S. trade policy changes.
Outlook
Management said second quarter 2026 was the sixth consecutive quarter of record net income, with net interest margin at 3.52% within its expected range. It stated that pipelines remain strong and that it believes it is well-positioned to generate consistent balance sheet growth while maintaining disciplined underwriting. It added that it remains committed to growing net interest income and exercising prudent expense management, which it believes position the company to deliver positive operating leverage for 2026, and that consistent balance sheet growth coupled with a stable margin should result in net interest income expansion in future quarters.
